Pop-up Flash Diffuser August 16, 2010 Mr. Richard Craze (U.K.) This Pop-up Flash Diffuser is just a great little idea, just slip it on and you soften the light so you don't get burnt out highlights on peoples foreheads and their noses! 10/10Pop-up Flash Diffuser (white) for Nikon D2,D2x,D3,D3x,D40,D60,D70s,D80,D90,D200,D300,D700,D5000,D3000,Canon 30D 40D,50D,7D,5D,1D,400D,450D,500D,550D,1000D,SX1,SX10,SX20 IS,Olympus E3,E10,E20,E30,E410,E420,E450,E510,E520,E620,E-P1,E-P2,Pentax K200D,K100D...
A clever bit of kit photographic that doesn't cost a fortune August 4, 2010 Kije Very simple, very cheap and very effective. You would have to spend a whole lot more money on a dedicated flash + diffuser to something very similar to what this little bit of kit achieves. Sure it's not top flight, but it significantly cranks up the quality of shots taken with your pop up flash. Indoor portraits are far more sympathetic, less white out areas and significantly diminished glare. One of my better buys.
Very Useful Accessory June 14, 2010 Domenico Faridone It enhances the use of pop-up flash by reducing drastically hot spots. A very intellingent idea at an affordable price. Easy to mount and easily pocketable. Recommended!
Does not really work May 26, 2010 tbuyer 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Good idea. Nice and simple.
Unfortunately, it doesn't work.
Let me tell you why: it does not significantly affect the relative size of the light source in relation to you photographic subject in 99% of the cases.
My story
--------
I bought this to soften the shadows when using the pop up flash (which has a very limited used, as most of you know by now if you are reading this).
However, after testing it Vs no-diffuser pictures taken under the same conditions I had no other option but to accept that it made very, very little difference to the results.
What I learned after that
-------------------------
I continued experimenting with my photogrphy and reading about it. Now I understand why I see so little difference: what matters to get soft/hard shados are two things basically: the relative size of the light source when compared with the photographic subject and the relative distance of the light source to the photographic subject. Neither of these is change with this diffuser (well, the relative size yes, but just a tiny little bit).
The experiment
--------------
Try this to see it for yourself
- Pick two photographic subjects: one big (say, a person) and one small (say, a wrist watch)
- fix the flash power (that is, set it to manual)
- Take one of your subjects and do the following (with flash on, obviously):
- (1) take a picture close to your subject
- (2) take a picture close to your subject putting a white sheet of paper in front of you flash
- (3) take a picture away from your subject (say 1mt, 1.5mt)
- (4) take a picture away from your subject (say 1mt, 1.5mt) with a white sheet of paper in front of your flash
Repeat (1) to (4) with flash set to automatic (or compensate for the white paper on your own).
Now, have a look at the shadows.
What drives the results are: relative distance and relative size.
The key point is that the diffuser does not change the relative distance nor the relative size (by a significant) amount for 99% of the cases (unless you only take close-ups of wrist watches and the tiny toys of your children).
Bottom-line:
* It does not work since it doesn't change the relative size of the light source compared to 99% of photographic subjects.
* But hey, the thing is so cheap that the worst thing that will happen is that you will say "well, it was very cheap anyway". Feel free to repeat my mistake. That is how we learn.
big difference May 18, 2010 Tibor Balogh Every camera has an own flash which gives you bad light. This flash diffuser is a solution if you don't like that poor light...
