3 out of 5 stars Diffuser Review   September 7, 2010
Ricky Duvet (London)
These arrived on time and do everything that they shoud do. Be aware that they do not have a wrap around and press stud attachement on them to keem them neatly closed. Only a minor point, but worth making. For the money I guess I should not complain!

4 out of 5 stars Budget brolly that works fine   August 30, 2010

This is a budget shoot-through umbrella, so it's cheaply constructed. But at the price, it's entirely OK for the amateur/beginner who won't be subjecting it to frequent heavy (or careless) use.

You may want to strengthen the tubular shaft, which feels just a bit too flimsy. Get yourself about 45 cm of 6mm wooden dowel, and wind a spiral of insulating tape round it. Insert this into the tubular shaft, and you have a much sturdier but still light-weight brolly. Simples!

If you're starting out and on a low budget, this brolly will be just fine. At just [...] , I'm very pleased with mine!

4 out of 5 stars Good value for money   August 25, 2010

Good value for money. I also have the more expensive Hama Studio Umbrella but prefer this one. The Hama version is more sturdy but has a long spike at one end and a long shaft. This one has a small plastic 'bulb', instead of the spike, so is easier to use close to the subject. The shaft has a smaller diameter than the Hama, which is a good thing. The Hama is a very tight fit in the Manfrotto 026 Lite Tite Swivel + Umbrella Adaptor. This one has a thin-walled shaft though, so does deform when the the swivel's thumb screw is tightened; sticking a pencil in the shaft solved that problem. It only locks in the open position, not closed. It is a little flimsy, but OK for the price. It doesn't have have a strap to hold it furled, but a couple of rubber bands keep it tidy when not in use.

Overall I like it a lot and intend to buy more.

4 out of 5 stars Reasonably priced for what it is   May 13, 2010

I'm just an amateur so I didn't want to spend a fortune on a lighting set up. This umbrella seems to be doing just fine. As other reviewers wrote, I find it to be more effective as diffuser than a reflector, but it works both ways.

The metal bit of the umbrella isn't very sturdy, though through browsing various forums, I found a small trick in order to remedy to this problem. Just insert a standard pencil in from the bottom. It'll make it a look stronger, especially if it gets screwed in to a swivel bracket.

Personally, I've never used it as an actual umbrella, but I'm sure it'd do the trick if I was ever to use it as one. Very versatile.

2 out of 5 stars Make one yourself for half the money.   April 7, 2010

The umbrella is made like the cheapest rain umbrellas you can buy at the gas station. Wont survive the lightest gust of wind. Go for better quality if you can.
