4 out of 5 stars Beautiful, intuitive but not perfect.   September 10, 2008

What I would say in brief about the iPhone is this: believe the hype. It works seemlessly, it's achingly gorgeous to look at and performs excellently. The GPS is actually very useful and has saved me a few times from getting lost.

But it isn't perfect by any means.

The battery life is not great. It's obviously full of clever (and energy-sapping) features like 3G and GPS, but with even relatively limited use you'll be charging this on average every one and a half days. You can turn down the brightness and do other things to conserve power, but they only have a limited effect. This also means that all those lovely applications you can download only have limited play life before your battery starts to drain. Having said that, it does perform well when it comes to making and receiving actual calls, which is really the point of the iPhone.

UPDATE 26/9/08: Firmware 2.1 has significantly enhanced battery life.

The camera function is severely limited. It's 2 megapixels, but there is no digital zoom, no light/flash and no video recording. There is also no sound recording.

You can't save draft text messages, or forward a pre-existing message to someone else. Nor can you copy and paste so if you want to forward a message you have to retype it.

You can't send or receive MMSs. To send a pic you have to email it; to receive a pic you have to log onto your 02.co.uk account and access it there. Messy.

If you're happy with this then great. I'm over the moon with mine but there are higher spec devices out there. What they don't do, which the iPhone excels at, is pulling it all together into an incredibly attractive and intuitive device.

Lovely.

5 out of 5 stars A must have gadget!   September 9, 2008

I like gadgets.Over the years I have spent a considerable amount of money on the latest electronic kit.
I therefore do not say it lightly when I say this is truely the most amazing electronic device I have ever owned.

Firstly it looks and feels great. Not too big nor too small. Thin enough to fit comfortably into a pocket.

The touch screen interface is a joy to use and very responsive.

Obviously it is a phone and ipod as well as a PDA.
As a phone it works very well. It syncs your contacts with outlook or outlook express so no manual inputting of these. Scroll easliy through your list of numbers with the touch screen. Touch the one you want and it dials.
As an Ipod it is essentially the same as an Ipod touch with 1 important difference I will come too later.
As a PDA it has callender and note functions that syncronise with outlook. For extra subscrition you can use the cloud (Me) function of storing all your info on the internet. When you change this on 1 device ie iphone all otherdevices are updated within a few minutes.
It also downloads your emails via push if you wish so that your emails still stay on the sever to also be downloaded later on your main computer.

So what are the Wow functions. Well for me I have said thats amazing 4 times with this phone:

1) It has a built in speaker which is actually pretty loud considering its size so you can actually use this device without portable speakers. Certainly loud enough to have playing as background music in a hotel or holiday apppartment.

2) It has satellite navigation. So what I hear you say. Well you may have seen satellite navigation but not like this!!! Tap the map icon and you are in google earth (remember how impressive that was when you first saw it). But what happens next is even more impressive. You tap the find me button and down you zoom in google earth until you are looking down on a satellite photo a few hundred feet above where you are and there in the middle is a pulsating blue dot of where you are on the satellite image. As you walk down the road the blue dot moves down the road.

3) Want to find any shop, restaurant, etc just type its name into the search function eg Sainsburys. Down from the Sky on the map come red pins showing all the local Sainsburys. Now all you have to do is walk your blue dot to a red dot. Finding those ellusive restaurants in foreign cities will be a breeze.

4) You can download lots of Applications. Alot are free. Try remote. This application lets you control the itunes on your computer via your home Wifi network. Your computer needs to be on with itunes running and that is it. Your iphone now functions as a remote for itunes on your computer anywhere within wifi range. Turn the music up/down change tracks etc all with a touch of your phone. Amazing.

So any criticsms. Well yes firstly like all Ipods the iphone has the same vulnerability to scratches so you should invest in an Invisishield or similar to protect it. Secondly 8GB (actually 7GB useable)is not alot of space for itunes and I struggled to fit all my playlists on it. But then I have been used to a 60GB ipod.
As its an apple based machine it will run Excel or Word documents but you cant edit them.
Battery life if you are using it alot can also mean daily charges due to the power demands of 3g web surfing and large screen.

These are however minor niggles in what will undoubtably be the new style icon must have gadget. Now all you have to do is get hold of one!

This phone is selling the in the USA starting at 200 US Dollars (current exchange rate 113), why is it being sold in the UK at nearly 600?? We do not get charged that much for tax - anyone who buys this phone is a fool in my opinion.
